Wondering what kind of aerospace engineering is being performed at Western University? Well, join us next week for an inspiring talk from Dylan Peters and Cam Brooks, team leads of Western Engineering‘s very own WE Rocketry, as they share the highs and lows of internationally-competitive, high-powered amateur rocketry!
Since 2016, WE Rocketry has been pushing the limits of undergraduate engineering by designing, building, and launching amateur rockets. Driven by both curiosity and competition, the team travels annually to launch sites to test their creations. Most recently, they achieved a remarkable milestone with the Hyperion rocket, successfully launching it in the New Mexico desert to nearly 9,000 feet in altitude with a nominal recovery.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! The team is currently working on two exciting projects: an upgraded version of Hyperion and a hybrid rocket. These projects feature student-developed composite aerostructures, flight computers, a scientific bioreactor payload, and a hybrid (liquid/solid fuel) engine— all of which showcase the innovative spirit and hands-on engineering approach at the heart of WE Rocketry.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from these passionate students as they share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations in the world of rocketry being accomplished mere meters away from our Cronyn Observatory meeting room!

Following this high-flying talk, Dale will give us another great “What’s up in the sky” presentation. With the cold weather often comes good seeing, although in Southern Ontario that could be hazy and turbulent rather than dry and still atmospheric conditions… So when the clear skies present themselves you want to be prepared!

Our meeting will begin at 7:30pm. You can attend in person at the Cronyn Observatory on the Western campus, or join us via Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89015777788
(or use the Zoom app with meeting ID 89015777788 with no password)

Parking reminder:
If you’re attending in person, remember to leave plenty of time to park and get to the Cronyn. As mentioned in last month’s notice, the parking lot adjacent to the observatory is now gone. Your best bets are the South Valley, Springett, and Huron Flats lots.
