Science Rendezvous at Western, Saturday, May 13th, 2017

Post by Robert Duff » May 10th, 2017, 1:24 pm

Hello All,

We have the following event involving Solar Observing and tours of the Cronyn Observatory on Western University campus on Saturday, May 13th, 2:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.

It is recommended that we get there well before 2:00 p.m. to get ahead of the crowd.

RASC London Centre members are invited to bring solar filtered telescopes and set them up on the brick pavement on the south side of the Cronyn Observatory. Parking in the Alumni / Thompson Parking Lot will be FREE all Saturday afternoon. Springett Parking Lot across Western Road will also be FREE.

Event: Science Rendezvous at Western
Date / Time: Saturday, May 13th, 2017 / 2:00—5:00 p.m.
Agenda: (1) Solar Observing; (2) Solar System Walk; and (3) Observatory and “Period Room” Tours.

(1) Solar Observing with the observatory’s 90mm Coronado H-Alpha telescope and solar filtered 20.3cm Schmidt-Cassegrain set up on the roof patio of the Cronyn Observatory. RASC London members are invited to bring their solar filtered telescopes and set them up on the brick pavement on the south side of the Cronyn Observatory. Parking will be FREE in the Alumni / Thompson Parking Lot.

(2) Solar System Walk: Graduate students conduct visitors on a walk across campus of the solar system to scale.

(3) Observatory “Period Room” Tours by Mark Tovey of the downstairs “Period Room” (a recreation of Dr. H. R Kingston’s 1940s office).

A Cronyn Observatory Saturday Public Night follows at 8:30--11:00 p.m.

This event was a big success. Almost 400 visitors stopped at the tent in front of the Cronyn Observatory. We estimate almost 300 came up to the patio to look at the Sun. There was a SunSpotter (courtesy of Fanshawe College), Heather's portable telescope with full-aperture solar filter, and Paul with the impressive H-alpha Coronado. Meanwhile, Canada's largest working refractor was aimed at a lamp on a transmission tower. Skies were mostly clear when the event began at 14:00, with gradually increasing haze and occasional clouds by the time we closed at 17:00.

Our member Henry Leparskas has posted photos of the events which took place at many locations on campus. The link is

It should be noted that Henry has now retired from a long career as a technical expert in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Fortunately for us, he will remain an RASC member for many more years and we wish him well
