Exploring the Stars & Public Nights @Cronyn Observatory, February 4—April 13, 2019

Post by Robert Duff » January 31st, 2019, 7:41 pm

Hello All,

The following is a schedule of upcoming events, February 4th—April 13, 2019, at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, for which the RASC London Centre volunteers are invited to assist by setting up amateur telescopes.

I have left out the names of the groups (except to indicate that some are Guide, Scouts and a Public School groups, respectively) since they are not on the Exploring the Stars Calendar.

Please pay special attention to the February 11th event, which is part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and the IAU endorses this by encouraging astronomy-specific events.

Please note that only paid parking is available ($1.50 / half-hour) in the Alumni / Thompson Parking Lot beside the Cronyn Observatory, Monday—Friday. The EXIT GATE NO LONGER GOES UP AT 8:00 p.m., but remains down throughout the evening. The parking attendant leaves at 7:45 p.m., after which exiting through the gate requires inserting the parking ticket in the automated machine and paying with a credit card. After 2 hours it becomes $21 flat price!

The schedule is as follows:

Event: Exploring the Stars @Cronyn Observatory
Group: Guides group
Date: Monday, February 4th, 2019

This will be a Special Event hosted to join the International Astronomical Union 100 (IAU100) celebration. As part of the IAU100 Global Projects, communities world-wide have been encouraged to host events on and around February 11th, 2019, to celebrate the theme “Girls and Women in Astronomy.” The first half of the event will feature short talks and an “Ask a Woman Astronomer” panel, and a quiz on “Women in Astronomy” with prizes. This event will be co-hosted by the Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration (CPSX).
